Yale Russian Chorus: Chornye gusary (The Black Hussars). The Black Hussars were a legendary elite light cavalry regiment in the Russian Imperial Army, formed in the late 18th century, originally to fight in the south against the Turks. Its official name was the Fifth Hussar Regiment of the Empress Alexandra Fyodorovna. The Black Hussars’ uniform was all black with white trim. Regiments with that name were also formed from surviving contingents of the Imperial Black Hussar regiment by both the White and the Red Armies in 1918 and fought in the Russian Civil War (1917-1922). Both the author of the text and the composer of this regimental anthem are unknown.
Yale Russian Chorus (1958): New Haven CT, 1958. Conductor: Denis Mickiewicz, soloist: Pavel Kripakov.
