#Kyparissia is built in an amphitheater position, as it stretches from the foot of Mount #Aigaleo to the waters of the Ionian Sea. It is 255 kilometers southwest of #Athens, 63 kilometers south of #Pyrgos Ilias, 100 kilometers southwest of #Tripoli, 67 kilometers northwest of #Kalamata and 74 kilometers north of #Methoni.
According to some, Kyparissia owes its name to the many cypress trees that surrounded it like forests at the dawn of its history, and according to others to #Kyparissos. This was Minya's son.
The myth always wants Cyparissus, a good hunter and friend of the god of music and light, Apollo. Once in his hunting, he killed a deer. And from then on, he was depressed. Before he died, the gods took pity on him and heard his pleas. They made him a cypress. And there were many cypress trees at that time in Kyparissia, that is, in the city where the #god - friend of Cyparissus, #Απόλλων was worshipped.
Its #history is very long and goes hand in hand with that of the #Peloponnese. Its beginnings are lost in the depths of prehistory. During the Homeric years, Cyparissia was called "Kyparissientas" and belonged to the kingdom of #Pylos, of #βασιλιά #Έστορα. Later the region was enslaved to Ancient #Sparta along with the rest of #Ancient Messinia. Many were interested in the strategic position of the city over the centuries: A castle was built on the site of the ancient #Acropolis during the #Byzantine years, then #Frankish and #Turkish #conquerors rebuilt the #fort making the necessary additions giving it its current form. During the #Turkish rule, #Arkadia, as Cyparissia was called in the #Middle Ages, had a privileged position as commercial center.
The city is divided into the old Upper #Town, which has been declared a traditional preserved settlement, and the New Town or Lower Town, a newly built area that reaches all the way to the coast. In the Upper Town there are many scattered historical monuments that bear witness to its history, such as the Castle of Arcadia, the #square of Arcadia with the plane tree and the Fountains at the entrance of the castle, the Public Baths (hammam), the #cobblestones, etc.
At close distances from the town of Kyparissia there are well-known #beaches, such as Kyparissia Beach, Ai-#Lagoudi Beach, #Sergiani Beach, the organized #Sani Beach, #Kartela Beach, #Giannitsaina Beach and Beach of #Terpsithea.
The wider coastal front of the Cyprisian Gulf is the most important, after #Zakynthos, nesting area along the #Mediterranean for sea turtles #Caretta caretta.
Kyparissia is a lively, small town of about 5,000 inhabitants, resting on the turquoise waters of the Ionian. It has a Frankish castle at its top, which offers an unlimited #view and a unique #sunset.
#Filiatra is a town in the prefecture of Messinia. They are located at a distance of about 80 km from the capital of the prefecture, Kalamata and about 41 km from Pylos.
Filiatra has many #attractions, most notably the small statue of the #Eiffel tower, (26 meters high), which adorns the northwest entrance of the city. It is a small-sized statue, which was installed in 1960, at the expense of the doctor Charalambos Fournarakis. Near the Gymnasium of Filiatra there is also a metal statue of the globe.
In the center of Filiatri dominates the large Kapodistrio Square with the Venetian fountain and the Town Hall clock, works of the 19th century, which together with the neoclassical buildings of the town bear witness to the significant economic development of Filiatri during the 19th century and the era of "society of the raisin". The city's fountain and clock were built at the expense of the Filiatrines themselves, as in 1871, the town doctor Angelos Mainos, originally from Italy, undertook and completed the orders, for the fountain in #Florence and for the clock in a factory of #Milan.
#Marathopolis or #Marathos is a coastal settlement in Messinia. It is the port, i.e. the port, of #Gargaliani. In the summer, its population increases, because the area has a strong tourist traffic and is a holiday attraction for people from the neighboring areas of Messinia, as in this seaside village there are rooms for rent, campsites, guesthouses and hotels. The establishment of Marathos in the location of the same name until then, dates back to the year 1859, according to a decree of the then king #Othonas, after a proposal by the competent minister of the interior.
