Peillon is a beautiful and unique medieval village entirely preserved and classified. The village of Peillon takes its name from the old fortified medieval village which dominates it from the top of its rocky spur, an eagle's nest at the bottom of a cirque of mountains preserved for centuries.
- What to see in Peillon -
1- The old primitive Romanesque church of the 12th century, enveloped since the 16th century by the present baroque church (Church of the Transfiguration)
2- The washhouses and the fountain of the lower square, completed in the 19th century and classified as a historical monument
3- The Chapel of the White Penitents, containing remarkable frescoes by Giovanni Canavesio between 1485 and 1490.
- My experience in Peillon -
Peillon was a true delight to visit and I was visually struck by its visual beauty as I arrived at the foot of the village in the early hours of the morning. It is like a miniature Eze with narrow streets and very steep stairs all around the village. But differently to Eze, it kept its authentic and picturesque aspect with no shops inside and only a couple of restaurants on the outside.
Peillon is very small though - it took me about 30 minutes to go through every single street and barely more to discover the points of interest such as the church, the chapel, and the washhouse. A good idea is to have breakfast or lunch on site, which is both yummy and affordable. If you are a photographer, you will delight in wandering the streets to get some really amazing shots.
I managed to visit Peillon in the morning and walk to La Turbie in the afternoon - a very pleasant two-hour walk through the forest of the French Riviera. If you are driving you can easily combine the visit of Peillon with another nearby village such as La Turbie, Peille, Coaraze or Luceram.
