Di Maio is the current foreign minister of Italy and one of the most important members of the Five Star Movement. He led the party up until Conte II, but he is today an essential component of the party leadership. If the Five Star Movement won the 2018 elections, it is mostly thanks to his activism and his combative nature towards Renzi's PD, and his propaganda on the events of Bibbiano. He is criticized for his overly simplistic rhetoric and for never finishing high school, in fact he is often caught on camera making grammatical mistakes. Ever since he was elected minister, he dropped his anti-establishment positions and has embraced a centrist outlook to stay in power and to maintain good relations first with Conte, then with Draghi. Di Maio is responsible for the recent improvement of the Italian-Chinese ties, however the Silk Road agreement he signed alongside Conte has caused a lot of controversy due to the authoritarian nature of the CCP regime in mainland China.
