The Miombo woodlands of East and Southern Africa. One of the continent's greatest unsung spectacles. Stretching in an uninterrupted belt from Tanzania in the east, down to Zimbabwe in the south and Angola in the west, they are the defining vegetation type of this enormous chunk of Africa. And who better to show us round them than Gus, the African Plant Hunter, in a desperate bid to break free from the bonds of lockdown!
In this episode he focuses on Msasa (Brachystegia spiciformis), the tree that epitomises these woodlands. Famed for its spectacular spring "flush", the Msasa is widespread across the region and is perhaps the tree, above all others, that most southern Africans associate with "home".
