#BreastCancerAwarenessMonth and all October, our “Soya The Cancer Destroya” campaign will be bringing you research about soy’s ability to protect our bodies against breast cancer 💪🌱
There’s a common misperception that soy foods increase the risk of breast cancer, but research proves otherwise. Today, we’re looking at research that shows that soy foods don’t worsen biomarkers of breast cancer risk in healthy women or breast cancer patients. Instead, as confirmed by both the American Institute for Cancer research and the American Cancer Society (ACS), soy foods are safe for people with breast cancer and women who eat soy may gain protection from breast cancer.
1️⃣ In an analysis of clinical evidence, researchers reviewed data on soy foods and risk of breast cancer. They found there is little clinical evidence to suggest that isoflavones will increase breast cancer risk in healthy women or worsen the prognosis of breast cancer patients. They found that there is no evidence that isoflavone intake increases breast tissue density in pre- or postmenopausal women or increases breast cell proliferation in postmenopausal women with or without a history of breast cancer. The epidemiologic data are consistent with the clinical data.
2️⃣ The ACS convened a group of experts in nutrition, physical activity, and cancer survivorship to evaluate the scientific evidence and best clinical practices related to optimal nutrition and physical activity after the diagnosis of cancer. Guidelines on soy relied on 3 large epidemiological studies which found no adverse effects of soy food intake on breast cancer recurrence or total mortality either alone or in combination with tamoxifen, and there is the potential for these foods to exert a positive synergistic effect with tamoxifen.
3️⃣ In a meta-anylsis of cohort studies, researchers found that clinical evidence indicates that women with a high dietary intake of soy foods may experience a statistically significant reduction in breast cancer risk.
More to come all month long on soy’s amazing health benefits! 🌱
