Thousands of human rights activists lay down in the centre of Rome on Saturday night (4/7) in protest against what they say is a lack of progress made by a UN conference seeking to set up an effective world criminal court. In a demonstration organised by Amnesty International, around 5,000 people lay down in the road between the Coliseum and the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation's headquarters building where the conference is being held. The first two weeks of discussion highlighted a divide between roughly 60 countries that want a strong, independent court and those who want to limit its jurisdiction and influence. Amnesty International has called for the court to be independent and effective.
