What is a Kegel? And how to know if you're doing them correctly...This is one of the top questions I get asked as a pelvic floor physical therapist. And to be honest, I didn't learn how until I was 28 years old, sitting in my very first pelvic floor course, and this was after I had already finished my graduate school degree in physical therapy. I share this to say, don't feel bad if you aren't sure how to do a Kegel just yet. You are not alone, and also...ladies, who ever taught us in the first place?!
Before becoming a pelvic floor physical therapist, I can't tell you how many times I heard, "doing Kegels is good for your pelvic floor, so make sure you should do them!" but was never given instructions beyond that. It took me specializing in this area to truly understand how to connect with my pelvic floor and also when to do Kegels (aka pelvic floor contractions). And for the record, you do not need to be doing 1,000 kegels/day to keep your pelvic in tip top shape. That's a lie and a video for another day, but know that that's a myth that needs to be debunked.
The purpose of this video is to help you understand the following:
🔸 What is your pelvic floor?
🔸 What does it look like?
🔸 How does one actually perform a proper Kegel/pelvic floor contraction?
🔸 Why it's important to know how to both contract and relax your pelvic floor?
