Sikkim Diaries Episode 3 | Baba Harbhajan Singh Temple, East Sikkim | Travel Tales
Harbhajan Singh was born on 30th August 1946, into a Sikh family in Sadrana village of district Gujarawala in Punjab. After completing preliminary education from the village school, completed matriculation from DAV at Patti, Punjab. Later he enrolled into the 23, Punjab Regiment on 9th Feb 1966. The Nathula Pass on the Indo-China border in the state of Sikkim is a strategically important location for the Indian Army. Blocked by snow in the winters, it is one of the four Border Personnel Meeting points for the Indian and Chinese armies. On 4th October 1968, while escorting a mule column from his battalion headquarters at Tukla to Deng Chukla, he slipped and fell into a fast flowing stream and got drowned. Army searched for his body for three days but didn’t found it. There is a belief that he appeared in the dream of one of his colleagues from 23, Punjab and he himself helped the search party find his body. Later, his body was subsequently cremated with full military honors. He was accorded the status of a saint(Baba) by the Indian Army. Any army official not maintaining a clean and disciplined attire is punished with a slap by Baba himself. This shows how disciplined he was all his life. His own attire which hangs in display need not be cleaned by anyone as it gets cleaned by his own soul. It is also believed that water kept at the Baba Harbhajan shrine becomes capable of curing ailing persons. Devotees, therefore, leave bottles of water in the name of ailing people and then give this blessed water to the sick. Units of the Indian Army that are posted in the region, seek Baba’s blessing with various plates dedicated to him lining the shrine’s walls. There is a strong belief in the army that Baba Harbhajan Singh will warn them of an impending attack at least three days in advance. Every year on 11 September, a jeep departs with his personal belongings to the nearest railway station, New Jalpaiguri, from where it is then sent by train to the village of Kuka, in the Kapurthala district of the Indian state of Punjab. While empty berths on any train of the Indian Railways are invariably allocated to any waitlisted passenger or on a first-come-first-served basis by the coach attendants, a special reservation for the Baba is made. Every year a seat is left empty for the journey to his hometown and 3 soldiers chaperone the Baba to his home. A small sum of money is contributed by soldiers posted in Nathula to be sent to his mother each month. The Army is on high alert when Baba is on leave. Captain Harbhajan Singh retired from the army a few years back. His soul has been living in those mountains for 50 years now. He is said to be protecting the country even after death. During flag meetings between the two nations at Nathu La, even the Chinese Army set a chair aside to honor him. The amazing view of the lake will make you feel that nothing could be more peaceful and serene on earth. You just could not stop admiring this wonderful lake. The lake nestles at an altitude of 13,066 feet, on the way to Jelepla Pass, bordering area with China and India. It is the second highest mountain in Bhutan. The shape of the lake resembles an elephant. The right side of the lake looks like an elephant trunk and on the left, it looks like tail. The lake is also accompanied by a stunning valley. A small village called Kupup, which has only few houses and a police check post is located at the lake coast. Kupup is one of the highest villages in the region, which was a recognized transit point during the silk trade between India and Tibet. Kupup has also earned recognition in the world map, due to the Yak Golf Course, highest of its kind across the globe. This 18-hole golf course, affiliated to Indian Golf Union since 1985 nestles at an altitude of 13,025 feet from the sea level and has been included in Guinness Book of World Records.
