As a small child in Tangkak, Johor, Mustapha’s peaceful childhood was disrupted by the arrival of the Japanese.
In this audio recording, he recalls a soldier threatening to kill his father over a packet of cigarettes, men forcefully recruited to work on the infamous ‘death railway’, and Japanese troops stabbing villagers with bayonets to force them to collect coconuts.
