On Thursday 5th May we will say BYE BYE BORIS, and vote in the next Mayor of London.
Our Mayor looks after the policing, planning, transport, housing and environment in London. They also represent London internationally. There are 12 hopefuls fighting it out for the spot. But 2 in particular are leading the race...
In the red corner we have Sadiq Khan from the Labour Party. In the blue corner we have Zac Goldsmith from the Conservative Party
What needs improving, changing or stopping in London?
Housing Crisis:
Too many people, not enough affordable homes.
Transport:
Expensive and overstretched.
Pollution:
Too many cars, buses and trains not enough cyclists or pedestrianised areas.
Integration:
So diverse yet often so divided.
Safety:
Petty theft, organised crime, gangs & the threat of terror.
Zac and Sadiq have plans to tackle all of the above. But, who actually are they?
Sadiq Khan is the son of an immigrant bus driver.
He started his career as a lawyer specialising in human rights law. He’s been MP for Tooting since 2005. He supports staying in the EU. He could be the first Islamic mayor of London and sees this as an opportunity to encourage and nurture integration.
Zac Goldsmith is an MP for Richmond Park and son of billionaire businessman James Goldsmith. His grandfather was a Conservative MP. He went to Eton, like Cameron and Boris, but was expelled over a possession of cannabis accusation. He supports leaving the EU. Zac’s first day in office would be dedicated to getting cleaner air for Londoners.
If Zac were to win,
The relationship with central government would most likely be beneficial, but many doubt he can pull of a Mayorship quite like Boris Johnson.
If Sadiq were to win, government believe it will be a way to begin implementing Corbyn’s policies.
So who will win….?
you decide on May 5th.
