Incentive Spirometers!
You’ve seen these sitting on your patients’ bedside tables, but do you know what these devices are for?
🫁Incentive spirometers promote deep breathing in hospitalized patients at risk for pneumonia
→Recent surgery or a respiratory infection can lead to atelectasis, a condition where the alveoli (think: gas exchange in the lungs!) collapse. Atelectasis can lead to pneumonia, delaying recovery for this patient and lengthening their stay.
❓How do you use them?
1. Instruct the patient to breathe the air in their lungs OUT (full exhale)
2. Take a slow, deep breath ⭐IN ⭐hold it, and slowly release. Mark where the patient reaches and have them try and meet or beat that goal! They should work to keep the indicator between the two lines– highest is NOT always best! This is about control and expansion, not winning the highest number! 🙂
Pro tip: if a patient is watching TV, tell them to try this a few times every time a commercial comes on!
Have you taught a patient about incentive spirometer use yet?

A message from Kristine, founder of NurseInTheMaking📣
My name is Kristine and I survived nursing school…and you can too!
Nurse In The Making was inspired during my time in nursing school. I immediately struggled and decided to create my own study guides. These guides have helped me personally as well as many others make nursing school just a little more manageable.I hope you find comfort knowing that everyone struggles at times. Nursing school is emotionally and physically draining. I hope these informative, clean, and simple guides help you navigate through all the information because there is A LOT of it in nursing school.
Happy Studying Future Nurses. Don't forget to enjoy the journey!
