In a media briefing on 14 May 2021, Police minister Bheki Cele assured the nation that his ministry was working around the clock to clear DNA forensics backlogs in police labs. Cele said that rape and gender-based violence cases were prioritised in this pursuit, followed by murder and attempted murder. The minister released quarterly crime stats from 1 January to end of March 2021.
