June is National Migraine & Headache Awareness month. In an effort to increase awareness NHI created this series of videos with our Advanced Neuromuscular Therapy Founder Cynthia Ribeiro demonstrating how Neuromuscular Therapists can assist patients in the management of the associated discomfort from migraines and headaches.
It is vital to use non-invasive techniques prior to addressing specific trigger point in muscles involved with headaches. If the work is done directly to the musculature, the patient is more likely to have a headache at the end of the session.
Upper trapezius is an important muscle because of its relationships with the temporalis, occipitals, and SCM. Addressing upper trapezius is a must for headaches.
While the Sternocleidomastoid is involved with torticollis, it influences headaches more; especially sinus headaches, and tension type headaches.
Sub-occipitals are headache ghosts creating a feeling of pressure within the cranium. The patients may tell you it feels like a pressure cooker which is a good indication that the sub-occipitals are involved.
We’re starting with the client supine; we’ll continue to side-lying and prone in the next video as we continue looking at manual therapy for headache intervention.
