Belgrade residents expressed mixed feelings over Friday night's
(10/11) approval of the UN Security Council's sanctions committee
to allow new fuel shipments for Serbia over a period of two
months. While welcoming the news, many said they were cynical over
the short time limit set to lift the embargo. With the onset of winter,
which has come unusually early this year, Belgrade had braced
itself for the long cold months ahead. Coal and firewood is on
sale at 70 to 80 Deutschmarks per cubic metre, which is almost
beyond the reach of the majority who have suffered from Serbia's
beleaguered economy following three years of UN sanctions. The
announcement of imports of large quantities of natural gas, liquid
petroleum gas and heating oil from Russia is seen by local
newspapers' reports as another step towards peace in Bosnia.

(lifting of sanctions) and I doubt that it will last a long time

am very suspicious"
