Four Diagnostic Methods of Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), TCM Four Diagnostic Methods
Ancient Traditional Chinese Medicine Doctors perform their clinical assessments through four diagnostic methods: Inspection/Observation, Auscultation/Olfaction/Listening & Smelling, Inquiring/Q&A, and Palpation (including Pulse and Abdominal examination traditionally). They were able to achieve an amazingly highly accurate standard of understanding of patients' conditions without any devices or machines.
Although highly sophisticated techniques such as auscultation have been lost among the majority of practitioners nowadays and the attainment of palpation varies greatly depending on the individual practitioners, most are at least trained to use visual inspection to observe for any abnormalities in patients' vitality, complexion, tongue and bodily secretions. We wish good TCM practitioners today can put energy on inheriting these skills, and more importantly, people and patients themselves can learn at least the basics to help themselves prevent, manage their health issues, as well as choose their healthcare providers wisely.
