The Pantanal in central South America is the world’s largest tropical wetland, home to an astonishing variety of unique flora and fauna. One of its most striking inhabitants is the blue-feathered hyacinth macaw. As well as being the world’s largest flying parrot, these macaws run a unique seed-distribution service that keeps the rainforest flourishing. But a catalogue of threats – from illegal wildlife trade to human encroachment – have made these forest gardeners endangered. And now they’re also facing fire . . .
