(21 Jun 2018) A Libyan coastguard patrol in the capital Tripoli rescued some 200 illegal immigrants aboard a rubber boat whose engine was broken down.
A spokesman for the Libyan navy said that the rescue operation on Thursday morning was complicated because of the large number of migrants onboard the boat.
He pointed out that the rescued migrants, belonged to different African nationalities.
He also confirmed that they were handed over to the Anti-Illegal Immigration Agency in Tripoli after providing humanitarian and medical assistance to them.
The number of illegal immigration boats is growing alarmingly, increasing the burden on local patrols and Coast Guard personnel with little potential and no attention from officials amid disregard by the international community and the European Union.
