There is a saying about this National dish of Nepal: *Dal Bhat Power 24 hours*. This dish is in fact Thakali and will give you energy for 24 hours; that’s why trekkers eat this meal during their trek in Nepal.
We made it! We had a wonderful Thakali feast at Jimbu Capital Grill restaurant. Minus the trekking part.
There are more than 120 ethnic groups in Nepal. Each of these ethnic groups have their own native cuisine. After tasting Tharu food, Limbu food, Tamang food, Newari food, Sherpa food, Tibetan food, we finally made a video about the most popular cuisine in Nepal: Thakali food. Thakali Khana (or Dal Bhat Tarkari) set is the most popular dish eaten in Nepal.
But who are the Thakalis?
The Thakalis are an ethnic group native to the Thak Khola region of Mustang in Nepal. They were known as Nepal’s most successful business people.
So, what did we ate?
- Kanchemba, buckwheat fries, which have the texture of French fries but an acquired taste,
- Dhung, the Thakali mutton blood sausage,
- Cheli Jwai Thakali set (fried mutton, fried fish, chicken curry, saag, achar, salad, rice, dal, aloo tarkari, mushroom curry, curd and galub jamun, and gundruk).
