(20 Jul 2020) Workers walked off the job at a Detroit McDonald's on Monday and were met in the street by dozens of cheering, sign-toting supporters.
"I walked out, because we didn't get a raise due to the pandemic. The whole time we've been working without a raise," said Dwayne Hill, 19-year-old from Detroit, who has worked at the fast-food restaurant for more than two years.
The Detroit walkout is part of a nationwide strike that organizers hoped would involve tens of thousands of people. Dubbed the "Strike for Black Lives," the protest was arranged by labor unions and social and racial justice organizations, which planned a range of actions in more than two dozen U.S. cities.
"The biggest impact is to see us out here demanding for a change. Because if we don't do anything, it's going to continue to happen as if we're allowing it to happen," said David Williams, who works at both McDonald's and Taco Bell.
The 19-year-old Williams walked off the job at a McDonald's in nearby Warren, Michigan, and made his way to Detroit to join the protest. He is asking for higher wages and a safer working environment at McDonald's, saying: "We're not receiving the proper PPE."
