In this special Halloween episode, join Joshua as he explains the braining (brains!) step of hide tanning. Also known as dressing the hide, this step is vital to preparing a hide to be soft and pliable once dry. It's a complex skill and we tried not to leave anything out, but there are small details that didn't make the cut. If you have questions, please leave them in the comments and we'll answer them in a short Bushcraft Bits video, where we get into some of the extra details that we didn't have time to cover or we answer viewer questions.
Brain Slurry recipe:
In a 5 gallon bucket combine 3.5 gallons of smoke tea or plain water and cooked brains in 1 gallon of water for a 4.5 gallon completed slurry. In the 4.5 gallons, use either 4 deer brains or 2 elk brains to dress 2 large deer, 3 smaller deer, or 1 elk. Deer brains weigh about a pound, so be sure that if you use sheep or something smaller that you account for the size difference. Best additional fats are rendered bear fat or grape seed oil. Olive oil will work too. You only need about 2 tablespoons to a quarter cup in this solution. More is NOT always better.
Be aware of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) and select your brains accordingly. All brains used in this video were harvested prior to CWD coming to Montana. We recommend either testing the game animals you harvest for CWD before collecting the brains, or use agricultural sources, like sheep, pigs, or bison. Please be safe and make good choices.
