تقع عنجر في محافظة البقاع، على بعد حوالي ٥٨ كلم من بيروت شرقاً، على مقربة من الحدود السورية. وتعرف أيضاً باسم حوش موسى، وغالبية سكانها من الأرمن. وهي مشهورة بقلعتها الأثرية ومطاعمها المقصودة من كل المناطق ال#لبنانية، والتي تقدّم أشهى المأكولات الجامعة بين الأطباق اللبنانية والأطباق الأرمنية، بالإضافة إلى سمك الترويت الطازج.
يُنسب إسم عنجر إلى العين التي تتفجّر عند سفوح جبال لبنان الشّرقية القريبة منها والتي عرفت سابقًا باسم "عين جرّا"، وكانت "جرّا" مدينة قديمة من العصر "الهلنستي".
أنشئت عنجر على يد الخليفة الأموي، الوليد بن عبد الملك، في بداية القرن الثامن الميلادي، مستعيناً بعدد من المهندسين والبنّائين البيزنطيين المتمّرسين بفنون العمارة والزخرفة المتأثرة بفنون الرّومان والإغريق. وقد استعملوا أعمدة وتيجان وغيرها من البقايا الرومانية والبيزنطية من المناطق المجاورة. وكانت المدينة تتمتّع بموقع مميز يربط الساحل بغوطة دمشق وسوريا الشمالية بشمال فلسطين.
بعد وفاة مؤسّسها وتدميرها بعد بضع عشرات من السنين، نتيجة صراع على السلطة والخلافة، أخذت المدينة بالتراجع، حتّى تحوّلت إلى أطلال ومستنقعات في القرن الرابع عشر. وبقيت على هذه الحال، حتى بدأت المديرية العامة للآثار اللبنانية بالعمل على كشف النقاب عن آثارها وترميمها في سنة 1948.
ويعود ما نراه اليوم في حيز هام منه، إلى قدوم حوالي خمسة آلاف لاجئ أرمني من تركيا، وخصوصاً من اسكندرون وجبل موسى سنة 1939، بحسب ما أكّده أهلها الحاليّون.
وتعتبر مدينة عنجر الأثرية الموقع اللبناني الوحيد من العصر الأموي إضافة إلى مسجد بعلبك الأثري. وهي من أكبر الأماكن الأموية كاملة التصميم المتبقّي في الشرق. وقد أُدرجت من ضمن مواقع التراث العالمي سنة 1984 من قبل منظمة اليونسكو. والجدير بالذكر أن هذه المدينة تعتبر جزءاً عابراً في الزمن، لأنها لم تستمر أكثر من بضع عشرات السنين، ولم تشهد من بعدها أي تسلسل تاريخيّ متواصل كسائر المواقع في لبنان مثل صور وصيدا وجبيل وغيرها.
Anjar is located in the Bekaa Governorate, about 58 km east of Beirut, close to the Syrian border. It is also known as Hosh Musa, and the majority of its inhabitants are Armenians. It is famous for its archaeological castle and its restaurants from all Lebanese regions, which offer the most delicious combination of Lebanese and Armenian dishes, in addition to fresh trout.
The name Anjar is attributed to the spring that erupts at the foothills of the eastern mountains of Lebanon nearby, which was formerly known as "Ain Jra". "Jarra" was an ancient city from the "Hellenistic" era
Anjar was established by the Umayyad Caliph, Al-Walid bin Abdul-Malik, at the beginning of the eighth century AD, with the help of a number of Byzantine engineers and builders who were skilled in the arts of architecture and decoration influenced by the arts of the Romans and the Greeks. They used columns, capitals, and other Roman and Byzantine remains from nearby areas. The city had a privileged location linking the coast with Ghouta of Damascus and northern Syria with northern Palestine.
After the death of its founder and its destruction after a few dozen years, as a result of a struggle for power and succession, the city began to retreat, until it turned into ruins and swamps in the fourteenth century. And it remained in this state, until the General Directorate of Lebanese Antiquities began working to unveil and restore its antiquities in 1948.
What we see today in an important part of it is due to the arrival of about five thousand Armenian refugees from Turkey, especially from Iskenderun and Jabal Musa in 1939, according to what its current residents have confirmed.
The ancient city of Anjar is the only Lebanese site from the Umayyad period, in addition to the ancient Baalbek Mosque. It is one of the largest Umayyad sanctuaries with a complete layout remaining in the East. It was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1984 by UNESCO. It is worth noting that this city is considered a transient part of time, because it did not last more than a few decades, and after that, it did not witness any continuous historical sequence like other sites in Lebanon such as Tyre, Sidon, Byblos and others.
