Over 85% of online app users are looking for an empowered and lasting connection, not a hookup
A social networking app for women reveals its biggest findings from a recent user survey

AUSTIN, TX (April 23, 2018) – The hookup era is over, says Bumble, the female-first social networking app. In a national survey administered last month, the app found that its users are truly looking to make empowered and lasting connections on its platform. “Bumble is about creating meaningful, respectful relationships and it’s no surprise that our survey data confirms that the overwhelming majority of our users are looking for commitment, not a hookup,” said Dr. Jess Carbino, Bumble’s in-house sociologist.
Key takeaways from the user survey include:
● Bumble users are looking for commitment: 85% of Bumble users are looking for marriage or a boyfriend/girlfriend
● Bumble is not known as a marketplace for hookups: Less than 4% of men and less than 1% of women on Bumble are looking for a hookup
● New connections are formed every day: 25% of Bumble users went on a first date with someone they met on Bumble in the last month
● Men are attracted to women who make the first move: 63% of men said that “women making the first move” was influential in making them want to use Bumble
● Women on Bumble are confident first movers: 97% have messaged their matches in the last month
“It turns out that both younger and older women prefer making the first move and that it had a strong impact on their decision to use Bumble,” Dr.Carbino said. “For younger women, this is more likely to be their first foray into online dating, so being empowered to make the first move and the higher degree of control that comes with that may be influential in their decision to use Bumble. It is especially influential for older women, because historically women haven’t been empowered to initiate contact like this.”
The Bumble survey also found that people over 40 are far less likely to think there is a stigma around online dating than people under 40. Sixty-one percent of women over 40 also believe that Bumble is the app most likely to lead to the type of relationship they desire.
Seventy percent of women over 40 said that their ability to make the first move on Bumble was influential in their decision to register. They are also actively making the first move: seventy-six percent of women over 40 on Bumble are using the app multiple times a week.
“Female Bumble users are empowered and ready to make the first move. These women have established their careers, experienced love, had families, and know what they want in their next relationship,” Dr. Carbino said.
The survey was administered via the Bumble app to 5,367 users in March 2018.
