U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Friday, ahead of the UK’s departure from the European Union as part of its Brexit agreement, that it meant a "new act" for the country that would allow them to deliver "changes people voted for," such as immigration or free trade deals.

Johnson's words came just hours before the U.K. officially left the EU at 11 p.m. local time.

The U.K. now enters a transition period and Britain has expressed its desire to end it as soon as possible and would like to come to a full trade deal within the next 11 months, a time span the EU has said is far too short to develop a comprehensive agreement.
