Best engine MRO in India by Safran | Offers to partner AMCA
As part of its offsetting commitments, French aircraft engine giant Safran will set up a maintenance, repair, and overhauling (MRO) facility for the commercial purpose of aircraft engines utilizing leading-edge aviation propulsion (LEAP) in India. LEAP is a high-bypass turbofan engine produced by CFM International, a 50-50 joint venture between American GE Aviation and French Safran Aircraft Engines (formerly Snecma). The MRO facility, said to be based either in Hyderabad or Bengaluru, will apparently be announced tomorrow when Safran CEO Olivier Andres meets Indian Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia.
On March 14, Safran and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) have also revived a joint venture (JV) to run an MRO facility in Goa for Shakti and Turbomeca333 engines used to power all helicopters manufactured by HAL. The Indian Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard helicopter fleets use over Safran 1000 engines, including 250 TM333s and over 500 Shaktis. Partly manufactured by HAL, the Shakti is the derivative the Safran Ardiden 1H1 for high-altitude operations.
Safran MRO
As per the reports, the MRO facility will be a state-of-the-art facility, set up through a 100 per cent Indian subsidiary route that will not only service some 330 engines used by Indian commercial carriers but also Safran-GE joint venture engines from other countries in South Asia, West Asia, and Africa. SAFRAN is also investing USD 150 million as a foreign direct investment with plans of moving into MRO of military engines used in Indian Air Force Rafale and Mirage 2000 fighters in the future to push the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative.
Safran offer for AMCA
Apart from the MRO facility, the French company has also submitted a proposal to the Indian government to co-develop with DRDO’s Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) a new state-of-the-art 110 kilo newton thrust engine for India’s futuristic AMCA twin-engine fighter jet project.
US has a famous regulation called ITAR or The Enhanced Business in Arms Regulations (ITAR) which is designed to limit and regulate the transfer of defense and army technology in order to protect the United States’ national security and advance United States foreign policy goals. This regulation do not apply to the Safran offer. As a result, the proposed Safran-GTRE partnership will be able to export military engines to other nations without any restrictions. The Safran deal includes a performance guarantee and transfers all necessary technology for design, advancement, production, and support, in addition to building a solid industrial aero-engine environment in the country.
AMCA engine by 2035
If the co-development process is all cleared this year, Safran is confident that the new 110 KN engine could be certified by 2035. The 110 KN engine’s co-development will be a total of between five to six billion euros.
The engine created for the AMCA will probably have many similarities with the propulsion system of the upcoming sixth-generation FCAS fighter in Europe, for which SAFRAN is the part of multi-project leader (Spain, France, and Germany).
