K-pop is a popular music genre originating from South Korea that has gained global recognition in recent years. The industry is known for its highly choreographed music videos and synchronized dance routines, as well as its emphasis on image and fashion. However, there have been criticisms of the sexual objectification of both female and male idols across the industry. This issue is exacerbated by the rigidity of gender norms in contemporary Korean society and possibly reinforced by Korean censorship practices regarding nudity and obscenity. Korean idols also often wear revealing clothing and perform provocative dance moves in music videos as part of the companies' marketing strategy. In some cases, this has resulted in censorship, such as the music video for "Miniskirt" by AOA, which was deemed sexually inappropriate and had to be modified before it could be aired on public TV shows and programs. The sexualization of K-pop has also created a notion of conformity in idol acceptance, leading to harassment of idols who do not perform in a sexually appealing manner, such as Amber Liu, who received criticism for her androgynous appearance and disregard for gender norms.
