For those that want a little more background on Hamster Style; The hamster style of using the fader in reverse was invented by DJ Quest of the Bullet Proof Scratch Hamsters DJ crew. DJ Quest is an OG and the Bullet Proof Scratch Hamsters are a DJ crew that helped to pioneer the art of scratching using the turntable as an instrument. Quest was the originator of the Hamster Style Technique - which is the way that I scratch and DJ.
So as I understand it the story behind "Hamster Style" goes like this. Back in 1986 DJ quest bought his first mixer and when he connected his turntables - he accidentally plugged the left turntable into right channel and the right turntable into the left channel - which made his fader work in "reverse" when opening and close the fader.
What started out as an accident when he was setting up his first mixer turned into a completely new way to approach scratch techniques and scratching all up. Eventually DJ equipment companies like @vestax.professional and @pioneerdjglobal picked up on the vibe and started incorporating "reverse fader" aka "Hamster Style" switches on their mixers.
Scratch DJ legend @djqbert put me onto Hamster Style when I first started scratching and his @thudrumble Vol. 1 Scratching DVD got me locked in on the art. Fast forward a few years and the modern legend @djchrisvilla has been putting the world onto hamster style with his crispy clean power cuts on all of the big stages.
As a DJ with 19 years of experience in the game, the art of hamster style DJing has transformed the way I approach mixing and scratching. I use my crossfader in reverse and it allows me to do some really cool things and give me a few shortcuts when it comes to my cuts. It’s not for everybody, but if you’re in a rut or you want a new challenge, give hamster style a try!
