We try the Vortex Razor HD spotting scope out to a distance of 6km on 5th Canadian Support Base Gagetown.
Procedures to explore on base:
1. It is a good idea to call Gagetown Range control first to see what zones are open or if anything is open before wasting a trip.
2. Not sure what the zones are or where they are? You absolutely need to and may be asked to demonstrate to a range control patrol that you know where you are in the field. This requires have a base grid map. You can purchase them by giving a donation at any base access commissionaire both. You need to have one on you. I've never had this checked.
3. Base procedures also require that you have a compass, matches, flashlight and knife on you. I've never had these checked.
4. To gain access to the base you will need to register at any open access gate. To my knowledge the only two gates are now at the Northern end of the base and at Camp Petersville. They will need your vehicle(s) registration, your I.D. and your hunting license if hunting. You will be given a large permit to stay on your person with rules and zones and a small permit for your windshield. Then you are free to explore.
