The ancient rivers that once snaked their way through the rugged mountainous terraine of ancient Victoria, had more or less flowed the same way for hundreds of millions of years. That way, being towards the present day Murray. Which, in the grand scheme of things, is actually the most present day iteration of the ancient waterways that coursed their way through the geological basins that exist in this part of Australia. Which is something they've been doing for over 400 million years.

This is a story of how this landscape that was thrust out of a deep sea, and remained relatively geologically stable for close to 300 million years, suddenly became buried beneath thin veneers of lava flows from Australia's recent volcanic activity, which would go on to eventually cover some areas, in the solidified rock version of the lava, basalt, up to a depth of 50 meters or more in some areas.
