Join Dr Rosie Weetch, a member of the AHRC funded project ‘Bearers of the Cross’, as she uncovers the significance of the Holy Sepulchre to Christian pilgrims.
From the late 1600s, architecturally accurate and highly decorative models of the Holy Sepulchre were made by local craftsmen in Bethlehem and Jerusalem as souvenirs to be sold to pilgrims and tourists visiting the Holy Land. Each model was accompanied by a parchment scroll describing the numbered different parts of the building that worked like an instruction manual for decoding the church. Only around 30 of these models are known, so the fact the Museum of the Order of St John have three examples is quite remarkable!
