Parker McCollum - Wait Outside. An exclusive live performance for Vevo.
There’s an obvious dichotomy in the title of Parker McCollum’s ‘Gold Chain Cowboy.’ The gold chain represents his modern flair: the signature flat-brim baseball cap he wears and the fact that he lists contemporary alt-rock bulwarks Ryan Adams and John Mayer as musical influences. But don’t expect 808s and trap hats from him. For all the contemporary ingredients, McCollum’s music has always been cooked in the country scullery. 2015’s ‘The Limestone Kid’ and 2017’s ‘Probably Wrong’ emphasized cowboy-playin’ six-string twang, influenced by his childhood love of learning Americana and blues standards on the guitar. Both those records likely sound best blasting out of a pickup truck parked in some field near your old high school. The same can be said about the ‘Gold Chain Cowboy,’ his recently released third album which has a bona fide hit on it with “Pretty Heart.” Every line on the record was written by the Austin-based 29-year-old, a proud feat in the notoriously collaborative country scene. An acoustic and a slide guitar was all he needed to set a great mood in our studio. “Wait Outside” is as earnest as love songs get, while “Rest Of My Life” waxes existential. They’re two examples of the record’s impressive versatility, and the performances were a great way to celebrate his latest achievement.
