Ajay Nair has always wanted to integrate animal production with crop production like in the past. The associate professor of horticulture at Iowa State University wants to know whether incorporating poultry on a vegetable farm could improve soil health while also being economically viable. The chickens forage on some of the leftover vegetable crop after harvest while also providing fertilizer in the form of manure. It could allow farmers to diversify, and also potentially save money on fertilizer and feed for the animals.
