One of the core values of the Motley Fool company, a financial investment and advice firm, is collaboration. And they actually have a Chief Collaboration Officer whose job is to get employees to collaborate, oftentimes in fun and quirky ways.
One game they play is the facial recognition game. They have a couple hundred employees, and each of them need to be able to tell everyone else's first name. There is a huge pot of money to be won if everyone can do it.
Another interesting technique that I've seen is from Morning Star, the tomato processing company. One of the really cool things they do when an employee starts working there is create something known as a colleague letter of understanding.
It's an employee's commitment that they actually write out to other employees. It includes what they agree to, what they commit to, what their responsibilities are, how they're going to act. It creates a relationship with employees that makes it much easier to drive collaboration.
