When you demonize any food and label it as as fattening or bad for overall health, you have moved away from science and into the realms of hypothetical stories lacking in the all important context.
Scientifically, no food is inherently fattening or detrimental to health. The cumulative, overall diet and lifestyle over long periods of time is a contributing driver for the amount of body fat you have and status of health you obtain. Individual foods eaten at single moments in time are not.
In short: if you enjoy bread, make sure you include it in your diet as often as you can.
