When a protest turned violent on the UC Berkeley campus on Wednesday evening, former UFC welterweight contender Jake Shields said he was there to rescue a man who was attacked by a group of protestors.A scheduled appearance by controversial right-wing commentator Milo Yiannopoulos caused a protest, which initially started as peaceful before it devolved into violence.
Six people were treated for minor injuries, Berkeley officials said. About 1,500 people had gathered outside the student union where Yiannopoulos was due to speak.According to the university, “150 masked agitators” were responsible for things going awry as they took to the streets dressed in black and threw fireworks and rocks at police. Administrators for the school decided to cancel the Breitbart editor’s speaking engagement amid concern for his safety. But the violence had already escalated.Shields, who currently fights as a welterweight in the World Series of Fighting, posted a video of an argument between himself and a group of demonstrators. In the video, Shields claims to have helped a man who was being attacked by the agitators.
