Many kids sentenced to juvenile prison in Indiana are sent to facilities with "indeterminate" sentences. This means they have no specific release date; instead, they must complete all the necessary levels of the prison program before gaining their release. In this video, teenagers Andrew and Able wait in a holding cell before being called to sit before the parole board to explain why they believe they're ready to go home. The hearing is called an ARC hearing -- Administrative Review Committee, where several staff members and the Superintendent will ask the boys many questions about why they should be released. Both boys talk about the nerves they feel waiting for their hearings, and what they think their chances are of gaining their freedom. Both boys have been in prison for a year. In this prison, all 5 levels of the program must be completed successfully, and while most kids think they've done everything they need to do in order to get to this point, sometimes, one bad answer or conduct report can keep them behind bars longer than they expect.
