According to Hughes, the scene where the Korean shop owners are killed in the opening was a subconscious response to real-life racial tensions at the time and the death of Latasha Harlins, a Black teenager who was shot by a Korean store owner. The objective of the scene was to shock and disturb viewers to indicate the gritty narrative of the film. Hughes additionally mentioned how the film was also a response to other popular films from the same era like 'Boyz N the Hood' and 'New Jack City.' There were also revelations about casting; notably, it was confirmed that MC Eiht was considered for a role in 'Menace II Society.'
