EXERCISE BENEFITS #6: NITRIC OXIDE: Nitric Oxide is an unstable gas made of one atom of Nitrogen and one atom of Oxygen. The amino acids arginine and citrulline found in proteins are used by the cells lining the tiniest blood vessels in the heart and other organs. The tiny blood vessels called arterioles are lined by smooth muscles as shown on the slide and Nitric Oxide relaxes these muscles so that blood flow increases. The Nitric Oxide is made very close to these muscle cells by cells lining the blood vessels called endothelial cells. Exercise increases the production of Nitric Oxide to bring more oxygen and nutrients to the muscles as they work. You can also increase Nitric Oxide by taking a supplement with arginine, citrulline, and antioxidants. The antioxidants extend the time that Nitric Oxide is active in the blood because it is rapidly oxidized by enzymes.
