There is nowhere more notorious in Buenos Aires than "Villa 31", the infamous shantytown/favela that was built right in the heart of the city. It lies right in between the Retiro bus and train stations, the largest transport hub of the capital. It's known for being a haven for criminals and all sorts of other dangers. But it was also the home of many immigrants from Argentina's neighbors - Peru, Bolivia, and Paraguay in particular. My original plan had been to go to the station and take a train to the north, but seeing Villa 31 just outside, I decided to take a little walk there and see if it was as bad as they say.
