What is spotting?
Vaginal spotting is when you’re having bleeding between periods. Usually it’s a small amount of bleeding that happens between your actual periods that you know occur once a month.
What’s the difference between spotting and my regular period?
The way to think about vaginal bleeding and spotting is that you’re going to have your regular period where your uterus sheds its lining once a month—and that’s normal. It occurs because the body prepares itself for possible pregnancy.
It is also normal to bleed between your periods. Sometimes it’s heavy and sometimes it spots. Spotting is that light amount of bleeding between periods. For many people it’s normal. It can happen from changes in your hormonal cycles that just come and go, stress, lack of sleep, or diet. Sometimes it’s just the natural ebb and flow of your hormones because any small change to your hormones is going to have an effect on how you bleed and your menstrual cycle. It’s all tied in very closely.
When should I see a doctor about my spotting?
The more concerning things we think about are if you have an infection. If you have an infection that causes bleeding anywhere in your vagina, cervix, or uterus it will also likely involve discharge, discharge that smells, pain, or fevers. If you’re bleeding with any of those, get it checked out immediately.
If you’re bleeding or spotting for more than 3 months that could be a sign that there is a fibroid or a growth or something worth checking out in your hormone levels—not just your normal ebb and flow.
