David Foster Wallace had a troubled relationship with television. He was a self-titled "television addict" who watched TV for up to 12 hours a day for months at a time during his darkest years. However, from that addiction, Wallace (like most addicts) discovered a deep clarity about our relationship with digital technology. Now, being a tech addict isn't rare nowadays. Most of my students on the weekend spend 8+ hours on TikTok or Reels alone. However, most of my students and most people are not as intelligent and perceptive as Wallace. So, in today's presentation, we'll be reading a long quote by Wallace on why television sucks because of its perpetual need to be liked. I will then adapt Wallace's populations to a 2024 digital environment where a society hooked on television looks like a utopia!
