When a child or young person is diagnosed with cancer, it’s a scary, confusing time for them and their family. This fear and confusion can be increased when bombarded with a lot of new medical words. We want to help the parents, friends and family of children and young people diagnosed with cancer to understand these new words.
So, we worked with the ‘My Kid Has Cancer’ parent support group to explain 10 of the most commonly used medical words heard by the parents of children and young people with cancer. In this first animation, we explain words like ‘blood cell count’. ‘mucositis’, ‘intrathecal injection’ and ‘palliative cancer care’.
