Over the past 50 years, oceans have progressively warmed up, absorbing more than 90 % of the excess heat in the climate system. More and more, Europe's glaciers are facing a loss of ice mass.
Consequently, the global sea level rise has accelerated in recent decades. The Joint Research Centre projects that extreme sea levels in Europe could rise by more than one metre by 2100. This trend will continue for many centuries, even if the surface temperature is stabilised.
