The Whiskey Crusaders review Midori The Original Melon Liqueur which comes in at 40 proof. Midori is Japanese for green, which is the emerald green found in nature in Japan. It is made by blending the juices of muskmelons which are extremely rare in Japan and only grown in one region. They sell for $20,000 in their first harvest since they are so hard to find. So, two different Japanese muskmelons are used to create this using two different production methods to create the flavor. It was in inspired by Shinjiro Torii the founder of Suntory who always wanted to create a colorful Western liqueur. In 1964 it was created in Japan called Hermes Melon Liqueur and it was used for the first time in the 1971 cocktail championships in Tokyo and people fell in love with it. In 1978 it was brought to the US for the first time as there was nothing like it on the market to be tested in the NYC market and the name changed to Midori when it was presented at Studio 54 in NYC for the cast party of Saturday Night Fever. Midori is part of the cocktail The Universe which won the US Bartenders Guild's award for best cocktail that year. It is made with 1/2oz Midori, 1/2oz vodka, 1/2 oz lime juice, 1/3 oz pistachio liqueur, 1oz pineapple juice which won in 1978 as well. By 1983 it was in 20 countries. It is made in Japan, US, Mexico, and France it was made exclusively in Japan until 1987. The French version is sweeter than the others. In 2013 they reduced the sugar content and started frosting the bottle.
