In the quiet hours just before 7 pm, barman Tam Cameron faced an unexpected encounter that would prove fatal. Whether the meeting was pre-arranged or an unannounced visit remains unclear to this day. Two men awaited him in the car park outside the Auchinairn Tavern in Bishopbriggs, Glasgow.
Without warning, one of the men produced a gun and shot 49-year-old Tam through the chest. The assailants swiftly fled, leaving Tam to be discovered by shocked colleagues and customers. Despite an ambulance being called, Tam did not survive, declared dead upon arrival at Stobhill Hospital on June 28, 2007.
The aftermath saw the pub sealed off, and investigators combed the car park for clues while questioning those present during the shooting. Tam, residing in Bishopbriggs with his wife and daughters, had already faced tragedy with the loss of his son Ross, who was fatally stabbed in 2006.
Detective Chief Inspector John McGovern, leading the investigation, stressed that there was no apparent link between the two deaths. The motive for Tam's murder remained elusive, though rumors of financial issues circulated.
A suspect emerged, believed to have fled to Spain, prompting searches in the Possilpark area. Simultaneously, a second murder unfolded, hinting at connections to Tam's killing. The body of Billy Bates, wanted for questioning in Tam's murder, was discovered in an oil drum near the Erskine Bridge.
Over the next four years, the prime suspect, Derek McGraw Ferguson (aka Deco), eluded authorities across Europe. In 2011, his identity was made public, with a description highlighting his distinctive features and tattoos. Despite appeals and a £5,000 reward issued in 2020, Ferguson remains at large.
The investigation involved international cooperation, including appeals targeting Scots in Spain, digital screens, posters, and leaflets distributed in multiple languages. In a breakthrough, law enforcement cracked an encrypted phone network, yielding significant drug seizures but no sign of Ferguson.
As the manhunt extends into its 15th year, the family of Tam Cameron awaits justice. The distinctive appearance of the murder suspect and the relentless efforts of law enforcement make Ferguson's continued evasion remarkable. The search persists, with Police Scotland urging anyone with information to come forward.
