Why Labels Won’t Give Artists Their Publishing Back For 20 Years

When you sign a record deal, you are paying for everything.⁣

EVERYTHING.⁣
⁣
The label calls this “recoupment”.⁣
⁣
Any money you earn, goes towards “recoupment”.⁣
⁣
Which means they are always going to pay themselves, before they pay you.⁣
⁣
If they even do pay you.⁣
⁣

⁣
He owns his masters to his records.⁣
⁣
He owns majority of the publishing.⁣
⁣
So when his records were running the culture in the 90s, he was cashing out.⁣
⁣
This was pre Instagram, YouTube, Spotify and Fruity Loops.⁣
⁣
You have no excuse today not to make money from your music.⁣
⁣
You have no excuse today not to own your music.⁣
⁣
No one forces you to sign anything away, you are choosing to.⁣
⁣
The artists of yesteryear didn’t have the education, technology or resources to keep their masters and publishing.⁣
⁣
We do.⁣
⁣
So why the hell are you signing?⁣
⁣
Why do you want to sign?⁣
⁣
Laziness?⁣
⁣
Perception?⁣
⁣
Clout Chasing?⁣
⁣
Impatience?⁣
⁣
Keep your publishing and ownership of all your songs.⁣
⁣
Your kids will be glad you did in 20 years.⁣
⁣
