Listen as @SnappyDragon and I discus the ins and outs of context in the realm of historical dress, racism, marginalization, fast fashion, sizing and our own personal experiences with the nuance surrounding the historical and vintage inspired clothes that we've made. The historical costuming community often forgets that there is so much more beyond the aesthetic, lace, cute frills and pretty dresses...some good and some bad. So what should you do when pretend with the idea that there's more to an outfit than what meets the eye? think about it. relate it to the modern world and your experience, or don't. It's up to you. But you can't escape Racism, not as a white person wearing 1860s clothing... definitely not as a white person wearing 1860s clothing at a plantation, a historical site of enslavement and human trafficking. But sometimes it's not quite as obvious as that...and even when it is, we urge you to think beyond the surface level and delve into the why's and how's and social constrict and political ideas and powers that write history. The powers of colonialism, capitalism, white supremacy, antisemitism, xenophobia, orientalism might be (and probably are) at play. It's nearly impossible to source clothing that doesn't have aspects of labor exploitation in its making process, yes even sewing your own clothes.
I hope you enjoy this discussion!#NoCostumesWithoutContext
