During the Second World War there were many different secret missions launched by the different armies involved in the conflict. One man who was considered Hitler's most trusted secret commando was Otto Skorzeny who once even freed Mussolini from imprisonment. But Skorzeny during the Ardennes Offensive was tasked with carrying out sabotage and deception with Operation Greif. This plan was devised by Hitler himself, and aimed to cause chaos in the American Army as a large detachment of German soldiers wearing US Army Uniform and using US Army equipment would deceive American soldiers. Skorzeny recruited the best American and English speakers for the mission, and they would carry out sabotage and also convince Allied units to withdraw.
However Operation Greif was never really considered a huge success, and shortly after the men of the two battalions were used in a normal Wehrmacht role. But a number of the commandos and German soldiers were caught in American uniform, and for this were considered spies and were then sentenced to death and were executed. Dozens of German officers were taken to firing ranges and were executed for their involvement in Operation Greif and they were executed by American soldiers. Wearing the uniform of the enemy was considered a very serious crime during World War 2, and for this the German soldiers of Operation Greif were executed.
