There have been some incredibly rich presidents throughout history. Many of the founding fathers had net worths over $100 million adjusted for inflation, and JFK came from a wealthy family worth $1 billion. Theodore Roosevelt inherited a vast fortune but lost a significant chunk of his inheritance when his cattle herd froze to death. President Truman is considered by many to be the poorest president in history. His net worth never topped $500,000 adjusted for inflation and he was deeply in debt before he took office. Truman had many failed businesses, but his political career was a rousing success. George Washington didn’t want to take a presidential salary, but Congress ordered him to take the money. The vast majority of Washington’s wealth was inherited and tied to the value of his real estate holdings. His most valuable asset was his Mount Vernon plantation. Thomas Jefferson inherited a vast fortune from his father that included 3,000 acres of land near Charlottesville, Virginia. He would go on to buy 2,000 additional acres of land and build a lavish home in Monticello. Teddy Roosevelt was particularly fond of cattle ranching, and if it weren’t for a disastrous winter that cost Roosevelt 80% of his herd he might never have become America’s 26th president. Before entering politics, Roosevelt lived off a $65,000 inheritance that he received from his father, which is about $1.8 million adjusted for inflation. Here’s a timeline of the richest and poorest presidents in history. Keep watching to learn more about the wealth and debt of these presidents.
