“The Potential for Healing and Harm with 5-MeO-DMT”
Interest in 5-MeO-DMT has increased markedly in the past few years. Despite pervasive curiosity in the psychedelic community, relatively little scientific evidence exists about this molecule compared to other psychedelic substances. This presentation will provide the very brief history of “The Toad Medicine” and synthetic 5-MeO-DMT, and will then explain the acute positive and challenging effects of 5-MeO-DMT, the link between 5-MeO-DMT use and changes in mental health functioning, the phenomena of reactivations (i.e., “flashbacks”), the importance of the context (i.e., set and setting) of the 5-MeO-DMT experience, and strategies/skills that can be used to enhance the positive effects and decrease challenging effects of 5-MeO-DMT. Future directions for 5-MeO-DMT research will also be presented.
